EU ready to take action against Turkey

Charles Michel, President of the European Council, expressed that the EU is ready for a more positive agenda, but it must be conditional, proportional, and reversible. This means it will only be implemented if progress is made in several areas, particularly in the Greek Turkish relationship, the Cyprus settlement, and human rights.  It will be determined according to Turkey’s actions. However, the EU has seen in the past that Turkey may take one step forward and two steps back. But we are not naive. Turkey is a neighbor and a NATO member, but the EU must ensure that the country takes a more favorable position toward common European interests – including in regions like Libya, Syria, and the Caucasus. Turkey’s position in these past disputes was not in line with Europe’s interests. We are ready to use all the tools at our disposal to influence Turkey’s behavior, Michel states.

EU provided reform aid to Turkey

The EU has agreed on a pre-accession financial aid package of 14 billion 200 million euros in total until 2027 to seven EU candidate countries, including Turkey. EU Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhalyi said in a statement in Brussels that the agreement reached for 2021 and 2027 “will be a positive, welcome and strong message to the Western Balkan countries and Turkey. Ana Paula Zacarias, Minister of State for EU Affairs of Portugal, the President of the EU, about the negotiations on the financial package, emphasized that they wanted to support the economic, political, institutional and social reforms in these countries. In the statement made by the EU Commission, it was emphasized that financial aid should be used for reform efforts, and that it was necessary to comply with EU standards, especially in problematic areas such as the rule of law in Turkey. The membership negotiations between Turkey and the EU, which started in 2005, have come to a standstill due to the political and diplomatic crises experienced in recent years.

Adnan Şeker is decided as Fethullah Gülen’s lawyer

A lawsuit has been filed against lawyer Adnan Şeker, who was arrested by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office after being detained as part of the operation against FETÖ/PDY, on charges of “attempting to overthrow the constitutional order” and “establishing and leading a terrorist organization”. The final hearing of the case at the Ankara 22nd High Criminal Court was held today. While the accused Şeker attended the hearing with the Audio and Visual Information System from the prison where he was detained, his lawyer was present. Şeker, who did not accept the accusations in his defense, stated that the allegation that he leaked the investigation information through UYAP on behalf of the organization in return for a bribe was not true. Claiming that he was on trial for doing his duty as a lawyer, Şeker demanded his acquittal. While the court board sentenced the accused Şeker to 9 years and 9 months in prison for “membership of an armed terrorist organization”, it ruled that there was no permission for “attempting to overthrow the constitutional order” and “establishing and leading a terrorist organization”.

80% of crops dried up in the Southeast

More than half of Turkey’s lands are under the influence of severe drought. The agricultural area, which was 26 million 350 thousand hectares in 2001, decreased by 12 percent to 23 million 137 thousand hectares in 2020. According to the data of the General Directorate of Meteorology, precipitation in the Southeastern Anatolia Region decreased by 40 percent this year compared to the previous year. This situation caused drought in the region, which is an important center especially in the field of cereals. The Southeastern Anatolia Region, which meets a significant portion of the country’s grain needs, also suffered from drought. In the region, which does not receive sufficient rainfall in the spring months, 80 percent of the cultivated areas are already dry. Farmers are worried about their debt. Fertilizer, seed, pesticide and diesel inputs are a serious expense. The farmer cannot achieve production and cannot harvest in the fields. It is necessary to take the water to the farmer’s field so that this drought does not harm. Yozgat deputy Ali Keven suggested, “A solution should be produced, I am asking how the debts to the market, to private banks, not just the debt to the state or public banks, will be structured. “It should be postponed. Registry amnesty should be issued for once. Tractor and harvester liens should be stopped. Pending support payments should be paid immediately.”

“S-400 discussion is end for Turkey”

Kılıç, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, stated that the issue regarding the S-400 missiles is ended for Turkey and that NATO rules were not violated with the purchase of these missiles. He also stated that relations with Russia are not an alternative to the USA or NATO. Turkey has taken this step, but this step does not mean that it has not fulfilled its responsibilities to NATO,” he said. Kılıç explained that this point was not reached in one day, with the following words for Ankara: “Due to the attitude of our NATO ally or our allies who did not stand by Turkey and did not give enough support, we took our own decision and walked the path. Why did we do this? For our own security. Any international agreement was violated. While evaluating the Turkey-Russia relations upon questions, Kılıç said that the good course of relations with Russia is not an alternative to the USA or NATO and that the frequent “axis shift” comments are unfair. “Why can’t Turkey, which fulfills its responsibilities as a NATO member, improves its relations with its closest neighbors, namely Russia?” Asking the question, Kılıç reminded that Russia and Germany carry out the Nord Stream-2 project together.

Greece Has Warned Turkey about that it Will Push for Sanctions if Tensions Persist

Greece has retaliated against Turkey, threatening to press for penalties if it continues to make “provocative threats.” The warning from Athens comes as the presidents of the two NATO members, who have long been enemies, prepare to meet in an effort to speed up negotiations aimed at calming increasing tensions in the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean Seas over energy rights. As a reaction, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that Turkey was prepared to protect areas and that Greece had participated in a recent string of military drills in the Aegean Sea. Then, Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar urged Greece to honor international agreements and remove missiles and military equipment stationed on a series of Greek islands in the Aegean, just kilometers off Turkey’s western coast. Nikos Dendias, Greece’s Foreign Minister, refused the proposal with a stern warning. He stated that Greece has traditionally supported Turkey’s accession to the European Union. But if Ankara did not tone down its “hostile” acts and “provocative” rhetoric, Athens was prepared to revive its request for EU sanctions on its NATO partner.

Turkey’s investments in Algeria are increasing

Turkey is signing important investments and collaborations in Algeria, a North African country. There have been important developments in Turkey-Algeria relations recently. Speaking to the French magazine Le Point, Algerian President Abdulmecid Tebboune stated that he had excellent relations with the Turks, who invested approximately 5 billion dollars in the country without any political expectations. These investments are not new. Algeria Investment Development Agency announced that in 2018, Turkey surpassed France and ranked first in the list of foreign investors in the country. Algeria is actually a relatively stable country in extremely unstable geography. For this reason, it is important for Turkey, which has some problems in its relations with Egypt, Israel, Syria, and Gulf countries, to develop relations with Algeria in order to increase its influence both in the region and in the Arab world. In addition, this country, which has a very long land border with Libya, follows a policy that does not contradict Turkey’s current position in Libya and is technically opposite Haftar. Above all, the development of relations with Algeria, which is one of the influential countries of Africa and the Mediterranean with its important natural resources, population, economic, political, and military power, is an ambitious and ambitious country that has recently played an important role both in Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean. It is extremely important for a Turkey that pursues a foreign policy.

Mustafa Şentop: We are determined to protect the interests of the Turkish Cypriot people

KKTC Parliament Speaker Sennaroğlu, who came to Turkey to make official contacts, met with the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey Şentop. Sentop, who gave a message of determination to protect the interests of the TRNC, said, “The uncompromising attitude of the Greek Cypriot side leaves the negotiations inconclusive.” Şentop stated that the relations between the parliaments of the two countries have been excellent since the first day between the presidents of the councils, the relevant commissions, friendship groups, and administrative organizations. Şentop reminded that the Greek Cypriot side once again showed that they will not share the power and prosperity with the Turkish Cypriot side in Geneva, and continued as follows: “The whole world saw that they were trying to patch the Turkish side to their so-called states. It is obvious that the negotiation processes that have been going on since 1968, unfortunately, could not bring a solution to the Cyprus issue due to this problematic mentality. It is not possible to solve the Cyprus issue with this mentality that does not see the Turkish community on the island as equal or even ignores it. The uncompromising and disconnected attitude of the Greek Cypriot side leaves the negotiations inconclusive. It is unacceptable that they continue to benefit from the status quo by claiming that they still want a new partnership state in this environment. It has been an extremely important step for us.”

Minister Çavuşoğlu interpreted on relations with USA

“It is possible to see that the USA is willing to cooperate with us not only in Libya and Syria but also in many areas from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea and the Caucasus,” Çavuşoğlu said. Çavuşoğlu also said, “It doesn’t necessarily have to be Patriot. If the US does not give guarantees about Patriot, we can also buy air defense systems from our other allies.” There are critical issues in the meeting between Biden and Erdoğan. It is unclear what steps will be taken with the USA in the new period. The problems that started when the Democrats were in charge continued under Trump. Biden has some words about April 24. The S400 issue still continues. We see that the US administration has a desire to work with Turkey in many strategic areas. On the one hand, how will we solve these problems, on the other hand, will we be able to strengthen relations? We also have relations in the economic field. What do we need to do to reach the goals? The USA has to accept that; The Republic of Turkey bought a defense system from another country once. It’s over. From now on, we need this until the day when Turkey starts to produce its own air defense system. It is necessary to cooperate with us and give a guarantee for the products we will purchase in the future. The S-400 will be under our 100% control. There is already training. Our engineers, our soldiers will control it. No Russian soldiers will be in Turkey during the use phase. We did not use a term that would offend the Russians. Our expectations must be met.”

Opposition’s reaction to the Istanbul Canal

Opposition to Kanal Istanbul, where Erdoğan announced that the first pickaxe will be struck on June 26, is increasing. Rejecting the criticisms from non-governmental organizations and the opposition regarding the Kanal Istanbul project, Erdoğan said, “Those who try to prevent the Istanbul Canal with so much nonsense, from triggering an earthquake to causing thirst, should first fulfill their minimum duties towards this city and then talk about our projects. “We will continue to compete in charity, regardless of such lies and slanders,” he said. Erdogan continued his words, “We will build the city to the left and right of Canal Istanbul. Istanbul’s change will be significant” Kılıçdaroğlu stated that if they come to power, they will stop the Istanbul Canal projects. Expressing that they want to transform Istanbul into an area of rent, Kılıçdaroğlu also argued that the project will not provide a profit for Istanbul and Turkey. Kılıçdaroğlu continued his reaction by saying, “If we have a winner, Erdoğan will talk about it with balls. Beton economy and forest of Beton policies continue.”

Mucilage summit and final declaration in Beştepe

At the meeting at the Presidential Complex, President Erdoğan listened to the scientific research and solution proposals of the expert academic committee chaired by the council of higher education President Yekta Saraç on mucilage. The fact that the Marmara Sea is an inland sea, its connection with narrow straits and other seas are limited, the increasing population density in the region, its exposure to domestic and industrial wastes that are not sufficiently treated and discharged partially uncontrolled, sea dredging and unloading activities, and habitat connected to coastal filling areas. These single-celled creatures started to react to changing environmental conditions for themselves due to reasons such as loss of water, excessive and uncontrolled hunting, and increase in seawater temperatures due to climate change, and they preferred to discharge their intracellular organic liquids more than normal and/or rapidly. The concluding statement of the meeting also included recommendations for emergency situations and suggestions for education and research. The entire surrounding of the Marmara Sea should be declared as a protection zone within a certain plan. The difficulties experienced by the fishing sector should be followed immediately. Action plans should be established against accidents that may occur in the Bosphorus. Integration of existing treatment plants with advanced treatment technologies should be ensured. A monitoring committee should be established on the subject.

Turkey is the country that pollutes the seas the most with river litter in Europe

According to a study, Turkey is the country that causes the most marine pollution in Europe with garbage drifting from rivers. Researchers pointed out that the main factor causing marine pollution is the use of plastic. Data from a study of litter going into the oceans from 42 European rivers was published in the environmental journal Nature Sustainability. According to the research, the results of which were reported in the British newspaper The Guardian and the German news portal Spiegel, 16 percent of the garbage drifted from the rivers to the sea originates from Turkey. In the source country ranking, Italy ranked second with 11.3, England third with 8.4 percent, and Spain fourth with 8.21 percent, after Turkey. Germany, which has fewer coastlines, is responsible for about 2 percent of the litter drifting from rivers to the sea. Noting that a large part of the pollution in the seas is caused by plastic, researcher Daniel González-Fernández from the University of Cádiz in Spain said that cleaning the rivers will not be enough to reduce this pollution, but the use of plastic should be reduced to dry the source of the litter.

Biden’s oil company decision

While Syria is expected to be one of the main agenda items in the Erdogan-Biden and Biden-Putin talks to be held this week, a decision by Joe Biden is considered as a “gesture” to Turkey. Oytun Orhan, from Middle East Studies Center (ORSAM) Levant Studies, said that Biden’s decision could be interpreted as a “show of goodwill” against both Turkey and Russia before the Erdogan and Putin meetings. Orhan said, “It is known that YPG is the first problem in Turkey’s relations with the United States. It does not seem very possible to make progress in relations without overcoming this problem. It is a question that these talks should be a step taken before the talks as a gesture against Turkey.” Arguing that this development, however, should not be read as the US will make radical changes in Syria and self-government/SDF policies, Orhan said, “These steps are a decision for tactical purposes.” According to the source, who argued that the negotiations between the self-government and Damascus were blocked due to the policies and steps of Damascus, the course of the next process is expected to be shaped after the Biden-Putin and Erdogan talks.

Political assassinations, international drug smuggling, sexual assault, and corruption are among his claims. “As there is no Interpol warrant for me, they said, I’m a visitor in Turkey like everyone else,” he said, denying allegations that he was apprehended in an operation by “intelligence officials and commandos.” “In any case, I am not a sought person under international law. As a result, our great state is unable to conduct an official operation against me. They treated me as cordially as they would any other regular individual ” Peker expressed. “We won’t stop telling this narrative if we don’t die and stay alive,” also he added in another tweet, adding that he will keep making videos.
